Click questions to view the answers. Additional question? please email me Q. Can I give a pet portrait as a gift?
Certainly. Many of the
samples shown were successful gifts. However, you should try to
involve the recipient in the portrait process. The simple reason is
that he or she knows her or his animals best and is the one who will
be enjoying the portrait for many years to come. It’s
important to get it right when you can. If you give a commissioned portrait as a gift, you will need to pay a 50% deposit. If required, I can make
a custom gift card for you to give in place of the future painting.
Q. How long does a typical painting take?
Generally allow 6 weeks. Rush orders are possible, but are subject to
my schedule.
Q. I’m not located in an area you frequently travel to; can I still commission a portrait? Yes. I’ll travel about anywhere
in the continental US as long as you line up several portraits (hint: convince
your friends). I have friends scattered throughout the country, so I’m
always looking for an excuse to visit them. In the Carolinas, NY, and
RI I’m more flexible and will happily do a single portrait when it coincides
with my travel schedule. In general, email me your request and location and
we’ll work something out.
Q. Do you paint animals other than cats and dogs? Certainly. I’m working on
a painting of a friend and his opossum. As long as I have good photographs,
I can make the painting. I won’t accept a commission unless I believe
the painting will turn out well.
Q. What if I’m too far away or my pet is deceased?
Again, if you have a good photograph, I will let you know if it will work
for a painting.
Q. Who are your typical clients? People who love their
pets! Typical clients also have an interest in fine art. If you’re not
used to buying art, $600 can seem like a lot to spend for a painting. However,
consider that a painting is something you can enjoy every day for the rest
of your life. Commissions also make a great gift.
Q. Will your prices go up? Yes. Due to demand, time constraints (and hopefully, constantly improving) my prices will continue to increase. If you know you want a portrait, it’s best to initiate the commission
now.
Q. Why did you start painting pet portraits? About seven years ago, I began
hearing a persistent voice in my head that urged me to paint portraits of the
animals I grew up with. The voice was simply mom on the phone and she wanted
the pets painted. Four dogs, two cats, a rabbit and horse later I ran out of
pets, and began accepting paid invitations to paint others' animals. I’ve
always painted people and places that I’m familiar with, so including
the animals you and I live with is a natural progression. I also enjoy meeting
new people and their animals.
Q. Do you paint subject matter other than animals?
Yes. Most of the work I exhibit and sell involves people and interiors.
The painting process I use for all work is basically the same. However, I
keep this work separate because the content and subject matter is different
(and at times a little more risqué and potentially offensive to the
mild at heart). If you wish to see this work, you will have to email me for
a login and password to my other website.
Q. Will you donate to my charity? Sorry, no. Please check back again
in 2010 when I've fulfilled my current charity obligations.
Q. Can I have the photographs you took of our pet?
Yes. A cd of the best photos is $25 (includes shipping); electronic transmission (ftp) is
$10. If one day I fancy myself a photographer, I’ll charge more.
Q. I used up all the cards you gave me, can I order more?
The current price is $1.75 per card.
